Designer’s Wishlist 2015

It’s that time of year again… December and the holidays are here with Christmas just around the corner. With that comes, the Designer’s Wishlist yet again. So here it is again this year, just a few ideas to get that designer, developer or creative on your list. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

1. Slim Wallet – Black from Supr Good Co. – $25

Perfect for just a few cards, and even a little cash here and there but still keeping everything minimal at the same time. No I don’t have one of these yet, but I’ve seen the wallet since the start and have always thought the idea and the execution with these is fantastic. Minimalism yet style and function in one.

2. Slim iPhone Case, Black, Yellow or Clear – from Supr Good Co. – $19

Just like their wallets, Supr Good Co. has some awesome looking iPhone cases. The beauty here is partly with the design and again with the function. Purely minimal with 0.3mm matte finish it’s enough to protect your phone (which we all rely WAY too much on) yet not bulky and obtrusive and in your way.

3. Anything from Ugmonk – Never Settle Letterpress Print $18

Jeff Sheldon at Ugmonk has put out amazing stuff over the years. Everything from tee shirts and sweatshirts, to prints and mouse pads to wallets and bags. I have the Slim wallet from Ugmonk and use it every day and personally love it and the simplicity of it. One thing I have always liked from Ugmonk was his ability to take inspirational ideas, quotes and sayings and portray them in such a stylistic and artistic way. For example one of his latests prints available as a letterpress print – Never Settle. As Ugmonk states, it’s easy to be average but only the standouts survive. No matter what you’re working on, put in the extra effort and never settle. Think about that hanging on your office wall the next time you need a push to do more.

4. Hamburger Menu Tee Navy – Dev Tees – $26

Joel Glovier started Dev Tees as a bunch of shirts for people who build the web. The project started out of a great Kickstarter project and has continued to grow. Every release of Dev Tees seems to have more and more options that are better and better and Joel always seems to put together ideas that are great for anyone has almost anything to do with building the internet from designers and developers and more. The “Hamburger Menu” tee for example is a great take on a ubiquitous navigation symbol with much “controversy” around it’s name.

5. Classic Toms Grey Canvas – Toms – $48

Simplicity. One word that can describe the classic Toms to a T. Slip ons made easy for anyone. Almost everyone knows the One for One mantra of Toms as a whole by now and supporting something greater is always a big plus. The classic Toms are still some of my personal favorites.

6. Artcrank Posters Gift Certificate – Artcrank – $45

Artcrank is “A Poster Party For Bike People”. Artcrank has been around since 2007 with popup shows in cities around the world to now a website with a shop full of dedicated bike posters hand made and designed by local artists and bike lovers worldwide. One of the best parts about Artcrank aside from their love of great design and bikes, the posters are limited edition and printed in runs of 30 so once they’re gone, they’re gone. A gift certificate for Artcrank lets that bike lover and creative on your list pick just the right one to adorn their office or shop walls.

7. SockGuy Socks – SockGuy – $10.95 – $12.95

Wether it’s for running, riding bike or hiking, SockGuy has the perfect pair of socks, (and who doesn’t love a good pair of socks). From plain black and white to Sriracha Rooster Red and an American Flag sock they have it all. And if it’s just to keep sweat off your feet or make a statement while on the bike, SockGuy still the pair you need. Check out what they’ve got and you won’t want to go back to plain old cotton socks again.

8. Kone Coffee Filter – Able Brewing – $60

Anyone who has a Chemex knows just how great of a cup of coffee they can make, and if you don’t have one, I recommend getting one and just trying for yourself. With that though, you have the option of the paper filters (which do wonderful), but there is something just a little better that might do the job. The Kone filter from Able Brewing. The Kone is a stainless steel reusable filter which helps pull more oils from your coffee and create a fuller bodied cup than those paper filters, and it’s sustainable too.

9. Codeschool or Treehouse subscription $29 / month or $25-$49 per month

The gift learning is something that will never go out of style, especially for those of us working on the web. Everyone is always trying to stay ahead or keep up with what’s next or what’s coming around the next corner and with a subscription to either Treehouse or Codeschool you can do just that. Whether you’re looking to learn something new or brush up on old skills, both Treehouse and Codeschool have courses for your, from PHP and MySQL to CSS and HTML and JavaScript or iOS and Android development, they’ve got something for almost everyone. So keep learning and keep doing awesome work.

10. Dropbox Pro – Dropbox – $99 / year

Dropbox is an excellent service, both paid and free, for anyone working with multiple files or photos or documents or almost anything. Dropbox makes it easy to get all of your files anywhere on any device and even makes it easy to share your files with anyone you need to. And with Dropbox pro you get 1TB of storage, version control history, camera upload options, and more. So get out there and do more and save it share and store it.

11. Apple Watch – Apple – $349+

9FD86042-DDEC-4230-B183-CAD6E88447E2

The verdict is out if I personally still want an Apple watch or not, I go back and forth when I think about it, but everyone I’ve talked to that has one loves it and recommends one. With the ability to be able to receive and respond to messages and more right from your wrist is awesome. To track your activity, walking, running, riding bike and more to changing your music and paying for groceries or gas with the flick of a wrist can’t be something that would annoy you. With all it can do now and more to come the Apple watch is almost a sure bet for anyone on your list (pending the price not being a hurdle in and of itself).

There you have, the Designer’s Wishlist for 2015. It’s a little later this year than hoped but it’s here and hopefully in time to get that designer, developer, creative or anyone on your list something they will love. I know I’ve missed a few things I’m sure, so let me know what else you think needs to be on the list and I’ll get it added.

Merry Christmas.`

Is this thing on…

But really, is this thing even on…?

Wow it’s been a while (almost a year I guess) since I’ve been around here. Well I guess that’s going to have to change. More things to come, things to update, and rants to be had. So, stay tuned there’s more coming this way soon.

Designer’s Wish List 2014

Wow hard to believe really that it’s that time of year again … December. We’ve seen snow come and go and come back again, it’s cold outside and only going to get colder. But along with that comes the joy of the holiday seasons and the joy of giving gifts to those around you. Again this year I’ve put together a few ideas that are perfect for the designer, developer, or creative on your list! Here they are in no particular order. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

1. Kleen Kanteen Steel Pint Cup – Single or 4-Pack ($9.95 single and $37.95 4-Pack)Kleen Kanteen

It’s the beginning of the end of the plastic cup – and maybe a lot of other cups in your cupboard really. Made of 18/8 food grade stainless steel the Kleen Kanteen Steel Pint cup could be the answer to what cup to grab each time you open the cupboard. Perfect for anything and almost anywhere, the Kleen Kanteen Steel Pint won’t break like glass and won’t fill the garbage like it’s plastic friends and it just might be your next favorite “glass”. Cheers!
